I really don't know how to feel about this book
While reading, I found myself intrigued for the most part and usually wanting to read more. The way the characters interacted with each other flowed really well, and the twists are unexpected, but still very interesting to read.
The reason this is only 3 stars though, is for the constant stereotypes tropes that this dystopian fiction novel falls under. The characters are running from the "bad guys" and they have to fight to survive. That is basically the whole book. There is no change or big event that causes things to be better or worse; it's basically just a documentation of what the characters do in this world.
The only real "character development" we get out of this is the backstories of all of the characters, and the SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP between two MINORS. I'll get to that last bit in a moment, for I have something to mention about the backstories.
TW: MENTIONS OF S*XUAL A*SAULT
The one backstory that "irked" me the most was the backstory of a character named Wab. Wab is a tall skinny indigenous woman that is unusual fast. During her backstory, the primary thing that is brought up, is how she was sexually assaulted multiple times. And the problem with that is how much it comes up through her backstory and how little it adds to the plot. The only reason the author added that was to add shock factor.
The other problem, is how the assault only happens to the women, and seems to be the only thing that is really developing them. I know that sexual assault happening to men is a lot left likely than women, but it is still something that happens. The men get fully developed backstories that have really well written plots, and all the women have is assault. That is disgusting to me
The relationship between the characters Frenchie and Rose is EXTREMELY weird. In this story, Frenchie is a minor, and so is Rose. But the author wrote multiple scenes with these two characters interacting very sexually. This is gross, and was probably one of my most hated parts about this book.
Even with all of this bad stuff though, there is still things to look forward to in the novel. I found the ending very satisfying and cool to read, and I found the disgusting details about injuries cool. By the way, if you are squeamish and not good with gross stuff, you may wanna skip out on this one :D
