It is a lovely romantic movie. It is quiet and slow building, with only casual interaction between the main characters. But over time it builds to being a story of true love. The time travel elements are more mystical than anything science fiction. And some of the paradox elements, which are generated more from the logic of science and math, should just be set aside by the viewer.

Of all the telling of Dicken's Christmas Carol on film, this is the most accurate both in the details of the story, the characterization of Scrooge, and in the spirit of the novella. This is a classic that can and should be rewatched every Christmas season. The costuming and scenery are historically authentic, and the acting is superb.

The acting was excellent, but the script was horrid. It turned Scrooge from a man driven by insecurities and apathy toward his fellow man, into a full blow sociopath and rapist. That significantly distorts Dickens' original message and story. It is a work of film that has excellent technique of cinematography, but horrid story telling. It is more nihilistic than uplifting.
