Mank is a success in merely a few areas: cinematography, score, sound editing, costuming, and the performances of Oldman and Seyfried. Otherwise, it’s a strung-along and confused spectacle. The script is poor, and the directing is confused and self-important. This is a film that only the spectacularly niche audience that makes up the center of a “Fincher fan” and “old Hollywood historian” Venmo diagram could fully enjoy.
