(SPOILERS)
I’ll be completely honest,
I started the movie thinking that the sci-fi/horror/action classic would have some substance aside from its action, but it really fell short in that area, which is almost completely made up for with the one-liners and outrageous gore-filled that fills the spot that the movie has empty due to the general lack of good overall cinematography.
The dialogue doesn’t have impact on the movie, as there isn’t that much dialogue that isn’t the soldiers talking about the predator. The writing is quite a bit stale and definitely reflects the common trend of 80’s movie that are solely focused on great action, and there are a lot of F-words, 106 to be precise.
So, if a movie has no dialogue, then it only has action, and that’s really all Predator has. The first half of the movie’s action begins with the soldiers raiding a central American jungle to find hostages, a scene that feels like it lasts far too long, which may be due to the fact that the film hasn’t set itself up as pure action yet, making the audience wonder why a film would have room for so much action. After the hostage raid, the soldiers slowly get picked of one by one by the Predator in the goriest fashion possible, including Carl Weathers getting his arm (That’s still firing a gun) cut off before being killed, a guy getting his skull ripped out of his back, and the soldiers finding a group of men skinned in the thick of the jungle.
80’s nostalgia probably led people to think the movie was way better than it is, and it probably only had success because of the 80’s obsession with sci-fi and action; this is reflected by the ratings of the modern-day iteration of Predator, with rotten tomatoes giving it a 33%. However, the movie was still fun, but definitely not anything special.
