Please do not misunderstand my position. The series is very well made and entertaining. However it is not truly Lovecraftian in nature and it does not develop a truly Lovecraftian atmosphere. I watched this show with high expectations. I was disappointed because it did not even attempt to present the brilliant essence of his conceptions. Instead it proved to be a vehicle for pursuing issues relating to racial discrimination while jabbing Lovecraft for his racist views. Lets get something straight. Lovecraft lived at a time when such views were common. This does not excuse them but it seems more than a little pointless to condemn those who are long dead for holding views that are not commensurate with current standards. Also with the way Lovecraft is excoriated for his racism you would think he had been a famous and influential literary figure in his day. In reality he died in poverty; believing his life's work a failure. Only a fraction of his work had been published in pulp magazines and he was little known outside of his friends and a very limited readership. His racist views were mainly presented within the context of private correspondence with his friends and acquaintances. His current fame is due to the patronage of others and the recognition of the power and impact of his fiction and also his rather massive private correspondence. Lovecraft could not have known he would become famous after his death or that his private letter writing would be publushed for public consumption. My suggestion to those who wish to judge Lovecraft would be to read his biography and try to understand him rather than to listen to the nonsense disseminated on social media. Also if you wish to produce a series critical of Lovecraft; don't use his name and ideas to make money.out of him. This is hypocritical.
