As an African boy who first read this book at 8, I always thought of the story as colorful and funny. It wasn't until I was 13 I truly appreciated the subtle way Achebe uses the darkness present in humanity to serve as a backdrop to the absolute destruction of a man.
If you think classics are all about enigmatic sentences and convoluted ideas and principles, this book would disappoint you. It's simplicity of expression is perhaps this books greatest charm, and would keep you up many a night ruminating on the fear that rules our lives.
