*spoilers* don’t read if you haven’t seen the film!
Don’t get me wrong, I love Studio Ghibli, I’m a massive fan, but this film is terrible. I was interested for the first 15 minutes, and then everything just went down hill. Why did the evil guy go to the other world and stab the girl in the first place if he could just get rocks to crush her? The whole plot is just very poorly constructed with so many plot points. The brown haired main character (sorry I’m bad with names) decides it’s a good idea to kill his girlfriend in another world to save her in the other, when they’d ALREADY seen that the drivers of the truck earlier in the movie die after dying in the other world. Then justifies it by saying it’s all just a dream anyway, If you’re doing something on the basis of it being a dream, it wouldn’t change anything anyway.... so why choose the route of killing your girlfriend in another world rather then protecting her. Very forced. ALSO, *spoilers don’t read if you haven’t watched the movie* if they’re just the same person... why are they the only people who don’t look exactly the same? I just.... nothing made sense at all, and I’m only giving it two stars instead of 0 because I love the art style. Generic, Overly plot convenient, plot holes, bad writing, terrible story, confusing end. I would not recommend this movie unless you want to sit there the entire time angry at how something could be so poorly written. I never write reviews, hence the terrible grammar, but this film made me so sad and disappointed I needed to speak my mind. Thank you.
