As a believer I may be biased but I will be honest. This review is solely about why I like the show, and not a critique on various aspects of the show (quality, acting, scenes, accuracy to Biblical elements, etc). There is of course a lot of "artistic license" given to the series as you have a lot of gaps in the backstories and lives of the characters from the Biblical narrative itself. I have so far not been displeased by The Chosen's ideas of what these peoples lives and personalities may have been. The first two episodes were a bit slow but by the end of episode 3 the foundation laying is pretty well complete and I found myself connecting and engaged with Simon's situation and wanting to know what would happen next.
Between the end of episode 4 to the end of episode 8 there were several key moments that really nailed this series for me. Each of them center around the way The Chosen captured the emotions and the heart in the interactions of the characters in pivotal moments. They take great care in the pacing, the dialogue, the capturing of the facial expressions, emotion and feeling that is just so intimate and beautiful. Several times in these powerful scenes I found myself remembering the beauty, hope, awe, and fear in that moment in my own life when Jesus entered my heart. If you are not a believer and you are watching this series, it may be hard to connect with. Unless somewhere along the way, The Chosen becomes the door for you to experience this moment yourself also. It very well could be.
