It was SO true to the character and in ALL the best ways. I felt like I was a kid again watching it and think it was fun, funny, and flipping fantastic. Even the musical soundtrack and scores were fantastic. I loved every second of it, and felt that the movie did a great job of transitioning the video game character I have known as loved (still love) growing up to the big screen. I really live the way they left it open for a sequel, and hope it happens, because the movie MORE than proved that it is MORE than qualified and good enough, to hold it's own against the wider competition of child-oriented live-action films. And as far as the comparison between this film and Detective Pikachu goes, the pokemon movie was phenomenally done, but This movie 100% without a doubt BLOWS that movie out of the water, and that's an understatement, to say the least.
