I grew up in a predominantly male gay neighbourhood in Dallas Texas & was 18 when AIDS hit friends & neighbours. It was the early 1980’s in America. I watched people going in & out of houses in full protective anti-com animation suits and then bodies one by one coming out fully sealed & protected. The majority died alone. Even partners would vanish in some cases for fear of dying or being found out they were gay. It was a very dark time for this community. No one would visit. They could get care. This is when meals on wheels started or at least it’s the first time I knew about it. It became the norm in our neighbourhood seeing people delivering. It was a lifeline. Everything we took for granted was suddenly gone. This mini series is a brilliant depiction of this time in the uk. It’s completely open about sex. It does not focus on the morbidity but on love, having it & the harm of not having it. I’m jealous of the close nit relationships between the main characters sharing a house. If only everyone had this love & support. But many at the time did not have this.
