For someone with uncles and a father who were WWII vets, this book is a sometimes difficult read. Even so, I have read it a few times and know I will keep it always - not only because it is a great book, but also to remind me what I have gained as a result of the sacrifices of those men, and the love of country that led them to enlist. (My dad was 17 when WWII began; his mom had to sign for him to be able to enlist in the Navy. But she did. Bless her too.)
Dad's ship, an LST, was sunk in the English Channel, and it is a miracle that he and a small number of his shipmates survived their time in it. (That experience also didn't stop him from being a passionate patriot and a great father. My siblings and I feel very lucky that he survived to be our dad.) We honor the other men who answered their country's urgent call after 12/7/1941. I am so thankful for this book that reminds me of what WAS, and gives me a glimpse into what might have been - had it not been for men like my dad, and a rather large contingent of other uncles who also served during the war.
