Steve McQueen is a great natural actor. The movie is worth watching with beautiful scenes set in 1920s China. The story focuses on the Americans (especially on Steve's "heroic" character development) while the Chinese are used as dramatic props.

This film mainly shows how difficult it was to be gay before the 1970s. His wife demanded that he be discreet and lots of drama when he wasn't. Kind of makes you dislike the wife and the whole set-up.

I couldn't figure out Leonardo's character's motives so the film didn't have much tension. (He only says "I like money" which is pretty weak) Also, an hour could easily have been cut out. Too much of the camera filming faces with blank looks, not enough emotional drama for the length.

These old movies are amazing because the cast is COMPLETELY WHITE with a few black people as extras dancing in the background - no Hispanics or Asians of course. Chloe Sevigny is mesmerizing in her underacting.

This is a good series to scroll through your phone by since you know what will happen already and the dialogue is pretty mundane. A good point is that it's interesting watching how a movie is put together. I like Juno Temple in her other work but the wigs they put her in here are too much!

Always interesting to watch though very French with a lot of philosophizing on filmmaking. I with Assayas would make more serious movies like "Carlos" which is his masterpiece,

It's witty and well done for the first half but (no fault of the movie) this Jane Austen story is weak because the love affair could have been reconciled quicker by a conversations or two between the lovers so the conflict seems dragged out..

It's great to see Marilyn Monroe act, she's so beautiful and expressive. The movie is very British and it's sometimes difficult for an American to understand what all the British actors are saying. Monroe is marginalized by the plot and she's mainly used as a cartoon character for the other characters to act "British" to in what is really a stuffy British farce. On top of that no character likes her until the end which seems impossible with MM. The movie doesn't fit her persona or utilize her talents at comedy. She's like a fish out of water. No wonder it wasn't popular in the USA but a hit in the UK.

Not a great story but good acting and filmed in San Francisco in 1950. Some good views of the waterfront.
