Absolutely phenomenal, if I had to sum it up in a single word. Though I do have to say Peni Parker was a bit lackluster in comparison to the other iconic spider-characters, whether it was because she isn't well-know, underdeveloped, or sorta just out there.
I think my favorite part of the entire movie, aside from the gorgeous animation, was Prowler. He is such a powerful villain, and the booming music that played every time he entered the screen, it sent shivers down my spine. The shock of his tragic character hits me even harder; he is so bittersweet in the end. Knowing he is more of an anti-hero raised my expectations for what might happen, and they certainly met them and even far beyond. The whole movie did in fact. I came in with the mindset that it would be better than I think it will be--and that much was true.
This is one of my favorite renditions of Kingpin, especially after playing the game and getting a taste of that one compared to this one. He felt more real than he ever has to me, but I do have to agree his backstory felt rushed. I hadn't dived into his character before, and I did feel sympathetic to him, but not much. It felt as if he was responsible for everything that happened instead of us feeling as if Peter was--so it was kinda hard to get behind his character. He was still a good villain though, no doubt.
I believe this movie was one of the best movies I've ever seen in ages. I love Marvel movies, and after being left with a bad taste in my mouth from Venom, this really reignited my love for the Spider-man and Marvel franchise. It's everything it felt it was going to be and just more, I definitely suggest it for new and old fans. The wait was well worth it, and it being the best animated movie this year is well deserved and entirely believable. Sony outdid themselves--especially with the post credit scene, and the entire credits as a whole.
