It’s heartbreaking to see yet another film about autistic people created by allistic virtue signalers. Sia could have made a great fictional piece had she done any research whatsoever, and worked with actually autistic people. It’s disturbing and uncomfortable to watch a neurotypical woman create a caricature of autistic stims and movements. It felt like some kind of new-age minstrel show. I’m shocked and mortified. To know that this film got green lit from so many people, giving Sia unchecked power to feel entitled to falsely capture the experience of autistic people and their families is horrific. I’m not surprised this was backed by Autism Speaks, an actual autism hate group. Do yourselves all a favor and Google books and works of fiction by actually autistic people. Nothing about us without us.
