This game overall is nothing short of a must play. The cutscenes make me feel like I’m watching a freaking action movie, except with characters I genuinely care about. As someone who hasn’t played the original game, I didn’t find any issues until the very end. In a fantasy game, there is a responsibility the writers have to explain everything, and in the last few chapters, several things come up that are very hard to understand. Things such as the ancients, the wutai, the life stream, and / jenova, though we will get to that in a second, just aren’t explained well at all. After watching the Leaderboard’s Final Fantasy VII timeline video I understand everything completely, and that video is just hardly over 10 minutes long. What is the deal with Sephiroth? He is showing up all over the place but I hardly know anything about him, it makes him much less sinister. The writers dropped the ball with explaining some of the fantastical elements and Sephiroth’s character as a whole. What is the deal with what professor Hojo was making? How does it link to Sephiroth? The ending isn’t conclusive at all and leaves way too many questions than it needs to. Hopefully come the release on Xbox One and PC next year they can fix some of the dialogue in a definitive edition type of deal. Camera is a little rough and so it moving characters around outside of fights, but those aren’t anything major. My biggest gripe is absolutely the writing around Sephiroth and Cloud’s headaches and Jenova and everything else that was in the last few chapters. Overall, fantastic game, just wish it was a little more clean towards the end. Almost everything about the game was near perfect, the graphics are absolutely striking, the characters are so lovable, the music is fantastic, the voice acting is pretty solid with an occasional awkward line, some NPCs have rocky voices too but it isn’t distracting. Absolute much buy if you like RPGs, stories, characters, and/or action games.
[SPOILER] One other small thing I feel like the plate dropping should have remained as a tragic event instead of just a scare. Very few people die and by how the ending looks even the places throughout Sector 7 are enough intact to be rebuilt. Would have much preferred if Tsang got to Aerith before she told anyone and she told him that she will go if she can get Marlene to safety first. That way there is much more of the risk and impact that it had in the original game.
