I have read this book several times over the years. It was introduced to me buy friend around '66. I have subsequently read a lot of Donleavy's works but this is my favourite. Every time I read it I find something new; a comment, a forgotten funny line... Even after reading it more than once, the fate of the characters (no spoilers) is always unexpected, and the radio news flash that Smith hears in the car toward the end is heart rending. The strange circumstances that Smith works his way through are ridiculously, by turns, hilarious and sad. All delivered in J P Donleavy's convoluted writing style. A great read which I would urge anyone to indulge in.
