This movie was an insult to Freddie Mercury and the LBGTQ+ community. Lets ignore the formulaic structure, the lack of development, false events and the cringeworthy cheese of the entire movie and move on to how anti gay this movie about a gay icon was.
I am a huge Queen/Freddie Mercury fan, as I type this I have a Freddie Mercury action figure looking down upon me which has been with me since I was 15. That being said, I had very low expectations for this film and it throughly succeeded at sinking below that to rock bottom.
The film is very anti-gay, posing gay sex and drug abuse as congruent sins. The narrative of Freddie be coaxed away from his nice heterosexual relationship with Mary Austin by the evil temptations of gay sex is really problematic. It completely ties homosexuality to immoral behavior and implies Freddie contracting HIV as his penitence.
The choice to leave the soundtrack as the original recordings, using Freddie's actual vocals, should have been applied to the entire movie: leaving it alone, Freddie is untouchable.
