After playing through the story and attempting the end-game level 50 progression, I am left frustratingly disappointed.
The story reviews you see online are accurate. The story is weak, and barely ties together why you are here clicking away trying to enjoy the combat mechanics.
The combat mechanics may be ok, if I could get to a point to put equipment together with any synergy. Like other looters, it is pointless to try to upgrade pieces you like until you are max level as you will quickly make them obsolete.
My biggest frustration are the number of monsters/bosses who just repeat 3 moves, 1-2 of which cannot miss you. Like in Dark Souls, you spend your time spamming dodge, and that doesn't always work. The Shield block mechanic is great, until you are facing bosses (the whole point of the end game), who just blast right through it. So you can't dodge, and you can't block. It becomes a game of more luck then skill. You can die over and over and over, with no real penalty. The boss battles are designed with HP check points, so it is obviously intentional that you are expected to die a lot. This does not provide that sense of accomplishment when you beat them, but instead a sense of mild relief. Not something I play video games for.
I am glad I did not pay for this game directly. It was a bonus for purchasing my 5700xt. I do not recommend this game. It seems to be something sloppily put together in a poor attempt to play on our psychological needs for the looter gratification. I am not even sure what can be done to improve it considering the dev's idea of harder boss fights is just adding more one hit killer creatures to certain battles and hope you get lucky to survive.
