I've always struggled to keep up with my fitness. I'm dedicated, but it's not like I've ever had the strongest of wills. Treadmills, weight machines, the local gym, they all work for a while, but eventually I run out of enthusiasm and willpower. But Ring Fit Adventure is different.
Ring Fit Adventure is genuinely the most fun I've had exercising. I don't get annoyed at, or dread Ring Fit time, it's just another part of my day - and I think it's really fun! It's a modest JRPG even without considering the fitness side, but with it, it's genuinely very fun!
My biggest problem with the game is how many times it starts to force exercises of a certain type. Some maps have paths which involve needing to squat to keep going - for some, no big deal, but I've slowly started to hate squats more and more playing this game! To be fair, I can probably solve that by just doing them.
I think the game would benefit from selective difficulty settings: increasing the difficulty increases the reps per attack, which is all well and good for some exercises - 60 quick, energetic knee-lifts for example. I haven't used a squat move since the mid-game, because there are just so many torturous reps!
A word of advice: skip the Mountain Climber attack. It might just be me, or the way I wear the hip-mounted controller, but I swear they are totally unreliable. If they are part of a fitness challenge, I tend to just do high, energetic knee-lifts.
Despite my problems with these parts of the game, I'm about to beat it - over 40 hours of play over more than 50 days - and I intend to start fresh afterwards. I'll come to terms with my hatred of squats, and play from the very beginning at max difficulty. I love this game, and my day feels incomplete with out.
Long story short: I wholeheartedly recommend this game. It is a bit expensive, but it's much cheaper than a treadmill or Boflex. If you are in the market for a fitness program, pick up this game and take it seriously. It's your fault if you cheat, and you won't regret sticking to it.
