As much as I want to leave a 4 [or even a 5] star review, it is...so-so.
Nintendo Switch version:
To ensure the game runs [up to] 60fps, there are adjustments to the visuals to make it work (lack of shadows, render resolutions, flat or low quality textures, etc.). This was the version I chose to play on, knowing very well there were other platforms I could play off of.
+ Music transitions between EDM and Rock during battles.
+ Original Soundtrack
+ Different approach to gameplay
+ Art style of the environments and characters
- Story-line is nearly non-existent
- Gameplay is too linear and somewhat short
- Controls are not refined and are glitchy
- Boss/Enemy attacks are [supposedly] tied to the beat of the music, yet they feel disconnected
- Some elements in the game either don't belong or don't have much to offer
Favorite Song?
"vs DJ Subatomic Supernova". It has a solid beat, delivering a satisfying 'disco groove' sort of feel to it. The artists who compose all the music are fantastic and are worthy of listening, even outside of the game.
My personal favorite part?
Mayday and Zuke. For some reason, I feel they work well together.
The Worst Part?
I bought into the hype and feel let down. And now I feel empty, unsure on whether or not I can play through the game again.
Worth The Cost?
The initial release price tag is $40. Considering the amount of content, length of gameplay, and the lack of polish, perhaps not. Personally, I would have retailed for $30 if not less. Wait for the bug fixes and a lower price point, then buy it.
Other thoughts:
I do enjoy an indie game or two, and they don't have to be perfect to win me over. No Straight Roads could have been something grand, too.
