It's a movie about a woman getting back to her roots and confronting her demons. Her demons being a nasty heroin habit among other things. I think given the final scene and that gentleman being an addict (as it's hinted at), I think the themes of this movie are the demons of addiction and how religion overcame it for the heroine.
