(REVIEW BASED ON THE EFFORT OF THE COLLECTION, NOT THE GAMES THEMSELVES)
A pretty good but incredibly lazy collection of some of the greatest games of all time. I'm really glad that these games finally got ported to the switch, but they could've done so much more with this collection.
First off, where is Super Mario Galaxy 2? This collection feels so incomplete without it, it is an amazing sequel and it really would've made this the ultimate Mario collection.
Second, Mario 64 has to be the most lazy game in this collection, simply because on top of not giving the game widescreen support, the game isn't even zoomed in all the way. There are still black bars on the top and bottom. This makes no sense as they put so much work into making Mario Sunshine have widescreen and the menus and everything else but they couldn't have at least done this? The game also isn't even upscaled to 1080p in docked mode, although Sunshine and Galaxy were both given this. I was really expecting Mario 64 to have more work into it because it is Mario's first 3D debut and is one of the most important games of all time.
Despite all of this, Sunshine and Galaxy are amazing remasters and, especially Galaxy, look incredible in HD. They both look and play amazingly with either the Joy-Cons or Pro Controller.
TL;DR: Mario 64 really needed to be worked on some more for this collection as it was barely upgraded from the original, but besides that this is a great way to experience these games in HD and on the go :D
BONUS SECTION:
Here is what I would add this collection if I could:
- Add Mario Galaxy 2
- Give Mario 64 widescreen support
- Give 64 and Galaxy full 360 degree cameras
- Have 64 and Sunshine run at 60fps instead of 30 (Galaxy and Odyssey pulled this off)
- Give all games the snapshot mode from Odyssey and SM3DW+BF
- Increase the draw distance for Mario 64
- Give the ability to skip cutscenes
