What a legendary achievement for Nintendo. Breath of the Wild came was so close to beating Twilight Princess as my favorite game, even if it did not, it is a true game changer. No game has ever lived up to and exceeded the amount of hype that I placed for a video game in my entire life. Breath of the Wild is easily my favorite open world game ever. This is the other game along twilight princess where i definitively know where I place it in my zelda ranking, which is 2nd place. There are a few flaws that I will address first.
My real issue was how the story was presented. Now the story is actually great. Like the idea of Ganon destroying hyrule is dark and tragic. Each location in the game also provides a lot of lore to Zelda. Zelda also has a very fantastic arc in this game and is really the only character that gets fleshed out. That's issue 1 with the story, as no one else really has that sense of development. Sure the characters are likeable, but I was not connected with them as much as previous Zelda games. Now my main issue was how the story is TOLD through the memories. I actually liked the cutscenes, but throwing them all over the place really made a disconnected story, and after watching each memory, there wasn't really any impact on myself. Its hard to have a progressing story in an open world game, but I would definitely like this to be fixed in the sequel. Last real negative of the game are the bosses, which are mediocre at best, especially dark beast ganon. Also, while the divine beasts were great, classic dungeons need to return in the sequel.
I really don't think I can do Breath of the Wild justice in my review. Here's the reason this is in my opinion the best open world game. Hyrule is massive, and there is SO MUCH TO DO. Every time you think your gonna go somewhere, you get sidetracked by like 1000 things along the way. That is something open world games struggle with. They are too big, yet a little too empty. Now don't get me wrong they're still amazing games. Skyrim is awesome, and Shadow of the Colossus is one of my favorite games ever. However, Hyrule for the most part is extremely dense for how massive it is. Not only this, but YOU CAN DO ANYTHING!! You can climb almost any structure, swim at almost any pond, cook almost any meal, and much more. What makes this world so special is how organic it and alive it is. So many areas are so distinct and realistic. In certain areas, you either need special armor or foods that can prevent you from taking damage in each region. I have never felt this immersed in a world of a game since my first adventure of Ocarina of Time. Now, The side quests, though can be unrewarding, are still awesome, like terry town to actually buying a house. The shrines, though small, offer some fantastic puzzles that are unique and varied. The combat in this game is fantastic, from the flurry rush to using different types of weapons really requires strategic thinking to how you want to take down enemies. Now about this game's armor. I love the clothes in this game. Each set of armor provides so much variety, so many benefits, and it shakes this game so much. Now like i said in my negatives, I do wish the story was presented more efficiently, but the amount of lore and the content of it is amazing. The diaries also provide more backstory to certain characters, including Link, which is fantastic. Finally, the graphics and music work extremely well with the theme and world of this game
The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild is awesome. Though I had a few issues, it is another phenomenal entry in my favorite gaming series. 10/10
