Let me start by saying this first: If you’re looking for this show to shed light on black excellence and how we’ve overcame it’s not going to be the film for you. Period. This show has shed light on how white realtors and white banks have destroyed black families (in a sense), how even though black folks wanted to advance we still had to face hard truths, it’s about unconditional love between a husband and his wife, it’s about growing pains from a young teenage black girl going to an all white school.. This show has sooo many lessons, and hidden messages in my opinion. I understand the outrage some people (of color**) are experiencing though. We’ve see over and over and OVER again, the mistreatment of black people in film and in REAL life. So i understand the need to want to portray ourselves as leaders instead of “victims”. But i also feel like NOW MORE THAN EVER we need to keep making white people accountable and uncomfortable with these conversations! So that they understand our pain loud and clear (and I’m not speaking for every white person, I’m aware that a good majority are ALREADY aware of the problem) Also we need to hold the mirror up to ourselves black people, and see how history has repeated itself and how we should maneuver through this. Overall i think this show is an intriguing eye opener. The creators of this show didn’t wrap it up in a nice gift box for us this time. No. They brought the issues to us, made us cry, laugh and damn near want to break our televisions but all for a greater purpose honestly.
