Excellent film though not as good as the first...and I just agree with many reviewers, it was more an adventure film than a horror film as the scares were really meh.....reduced to a few of the nature of jump-scares. In the book, the kids section was often intertwined with the adults section through alternating chapters that seamlessly segue into each other. Thus I was quite thrilled that It2 chose to do so as well almost 50% of the movie.
I was disappointed that Beverly's husband Tom and Bill's wife Audra only had cameos at the beginning even though in the book, their story arcs were longer and one of my favourites. However I could understand why they exorcised it because of the movies already overt runtime of nearly 3 hours.
However, we have to remember that IT is as much about the town of Derry as it is about the Losers Club. It's about how the town adults were affected by the power of this cosmic entity that they turned a blind eye to almost everything evil that is happening. The quote from the book "The adults, who knew better, knew nothing" was really apt in this source material. Therefore the decision to completely remove the "Scouring of Derry" at the end of the movie and replace it with an implosion of the house on 29 Neibolt St, complete with cheap effects work, was thoroughly disappointing. I could imagine the epic conclusion it would otherwise have been.
The glossing over of the trippy cosmic elements involving a turtle named Maturin and the creation of Earth found in the book was understandable because it would have driven most ardent watchers over the edge....and honestly I did not think that Stephen King truly believed he nailed those elements and is often the types of ending that was a throwaway running joke in the movie which was symptomatic of the his writing sometimes.
The adult Losers Club was extremely well cast and the banter between Richie Tozer and Eddie Kasperack created much levity throughout an almost long convoluted film. When Mike Hanlon sent each loser to gather elements for the Ritual of Chud individually was too lengthy and was where the movie could and should have cut it's running time in favour of the adding of the souring of Derry epilogue.
Still the movie is a good companion piece to the first movie and really should not be missed.
