When you consider this is the debut of both the directors movie career and CM Punk's debut acting role, the decent-to-good acting, fantastic camera work and exhilarating style and visual effects really do come off as impressive. Although far from a perfect movie, there is enough intrigue and depth to the characters and plot to keep me guessing, as well as a strong score and sound effects that keep you engrossed in the slow paced yet tense and disturbing atmosphere.
This is best viewed as if its a modern-day classic horror movie - less focused on jump scares and relentless action, and more focused on a slowly building sense of Dread with sudden revalations, genuinely horrifying scenes and surprising moments.
There are weaknesses, particularly in the pacing, which starts off really slow before picking up at the halfway point, and minor quibbles with some shaky acting and overall hint of b-movie qualities to it, but nevertheless it was an enjoyable 90 minutes which for the first time in ages has actually had me wincing in anticipation of something thats about to happen.
All in all, a very entertaining watch, and not just out of curiosity to see how Punk fares. This movie kept me glued to the screen, warts and all, and should be seen by anyone with even a passing interest in it.
