I've read the original books (excluding the ones written by the author's son after his death). I struggled to understand many of the concepts in the books, given that I was a teenager when I started reading them and even had to re-read whole books to understand the connection. I've watched James McAvoy as Leto, the God Emperor in Children of Dune before he became Professor X.
This is the full extent of my excitement when I realised that a new movie was being made. The director made some additions (why is Dr Yueh speaking Mandarin with Paul? I can't seem to remember this in the book. I also don't agree with it. )
that I didn't like but it didn't affect my overall experience. I loved the actors and actresses chosen to portray the characters.
The music was apt and came in the right places, unlike many movies which use music randomly just for fun. The pace was a bit slow in the beginning, though necessary to introduce the world of Dune to non-readers of the novels.
Dune: Part One was the movie I never I'd watch. I was disappointed to find out that it only covered half the storyline from book 1. Then again, book 1 had a lot to unpack. So, it does make sense. For the reviews sinning it for half a movie, I would say that it's actually good that it was half a movie. It shows that the director wanted to include as much as possible to it; instead of condensing a full storyline into one film. The director's vision of the book is spot on.
It would be an absolute shame and regret if this doesn't get the film series treatment.
