The Last of Us is my favorite game of all time by a landslide. The plot, the characters, the scenery, everything is perfect. The Last of Us 2 is amazing in almost every way except where it matters the most, the story. It is so bland and tries to go with the wow factor and it fails miserably in doing so because they pretty much forgot what made the first game so awesome, the relationship of Joel and Ellie. In the Last of Us 2 we only got that for 1 hour maybe 2 out of the 30 in flashbacks that honestly, every time they happened, I was either smiling or on the edge of my seat or crying. Those few moments were amazing in this game. On the other hand, the rest of the story in this one is just not good in my opinion. Abby, the newer and most important character of the new ones has a valid motivation in this story but the fact that it tries to makes us empathize with the decisions she makes and force us to play as her when we don't really care about what her story is, feels completely useless and infuriating from my point of view. The best example of this is with the dogs. While Abby pets them and feeds them, Ellie kills them, what a cheap and useless trick that did not pay off. Again, this is the story of JOEL and ELLIE, not Abby. Also, trying to make them the enemies in the story is completely out of field for those who love the franchise. In my eyes, because I do have an emotional connection with them, even if I disagree with some things they do, I will always choose them over a new character. I can see this part 2 being told in at least 10 different ways that could have left us with the same message but they, in my opinion, went the wrong way. I don't mind Joel's ending in this story, I was actually expecting it but it was so poorly executed that left the player speechless because, again, they tried to go with the wow factor and that just does not work when it is not properly executed. But the actual ending, oh boy. It is like Thanos getting all the stones and then not using them. You go through 200 people, torturing and killing them and all of the sudden you are against doing that? Just does not make sense at all. They disrespected Joel and Ellie's relationship in this story, again, it's their their story, not Abby's. Those flashbacks are the only thing I see as a proper sequel of the story in this game.
The characters in this game are meh, I really did not enjoyed them as much as I did with the ones in Part 1. The story tried to force them so much into me that I ended up almost hating them or even worst, not caring about them, especially Abby and Dina. These two main characters, I really did not care what happened to them because I had no emotional investment. Jesse was an ok addition and I'm glad that Tommy had his moments, he was a very pleasant surprise in here.
The environment and gameplay are the best I've seen in a PS4 in maybe forever, absolutely amazing along with the acting job that Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson gave for this sequel. They are amazing and hopefully they won't get any hate because they do not deserve it, they were phenomenal. These are the only reason I give them a star but because it is a narrative game and the story fails to deliver in so many points, it does not deserve more than that.
Thankfully, I still have Part 1 to go back to and play it over and over again, I'll just pretend this sequel never happened.
