KABIR SINGH
A copy of a Telugu movie Arjun Reddy, Kabir Singh is one of the finest remakes of a South Indian movie.
Kabir (Shahid Kapoor) is a Delhi medical college student, who is a topper in academics and sports but lacks in anger management and is a alcoholic. The principal warns him about his behaviour and even suspends him for a month after a fight which he gets provoked during a football match. His statement “I’m not a rebel without a cause” describes him... A go-getter in all ways... raw, intense and passionate... Maybe the wrong way for some, but for him what is right is right. But what makes him apologise and join back college is a junior student Preeti (Kiara Advani) and then love blooms in leaps and bounds, where he goes all out to claim his love for her and protect her and give her personal classes in Anatomy, where he draws per bone on her body for illustration which comes to and end with the Upper Thorax region. When she asks what he loves about her, he says “I like the way u breathe”.
Initially she is quite shy, but eventually falls madly in love with him after he fights for her after someone misbehaves with her on Holi. They go a little extreme, when he shifts her to the boys hostel to take care of her after her leg injury. He eventually moves to Woodstock medical college for further studies and their long distance relationship still continues to bloom and grow stronger. But there’s a sad twist to this love story when Preeti’s father disapproves of their relationship and gets her married elsewhere, only to turn Kabir to a hardcore alcoholic, drug addict and a man hungry for sex (which is quite hilariously shown) to be still practising as a renowned surgeon.
His family and friends try hard to get him out of his messed up life by forgetting about Preeti, but in vain. But one tragic incidence eventually makes him realise it and lead a meaningful life. The movie’s climax ends with a very emotional moment which surely will bring tears to your eyes.
Some dialogues will stay in your mind, like when Shahid says “Arranged marriage mein love hota hai Kya, Suhaagraat ke baare mein soch ke jhapat padte honge saale”, or his Fathers advice “It’s not the good byes that hurt. It’s the flashbacks that follows” or his Grandmother saying “It’s his time to suffer, let him suffer”
Shahid Kapoor has time and again proved that he is one of the most versatile and talented actors in Bollywood. He comes out with brilliance which makes us wonder how underrated this actor is. He has absolutely nailed his character.
Kiara Advani is quite convincing for a timid First year to a dominant girlfriend. She too passes of a college girl with an ease and has given a upstanding performance with Shahid.
All other characters like his best friend, his father, brother and grand mother are quite prominent in the movie and do great justice.
The dialogues of the movie are very delhite and raw. Every second actually brings out curiosity in how Kabir is going to mess up more. The dialogues are spot on and funny (when needed).
Special mention to the Songs, "Tujhe Kitna Chahne Lage", "Yeh Aaina", "Kaise Hua", "Bekhayali" & "Mere Sohneya". The songs are beautiful and full of love. The music directors and lyricists have done an excellent job to complete the movie.
Overall Rating - 4.5/5
P.S. Be ready for a lot of hooting and whistles on Shahid’s actions, looks and dialogues.
