I hate that they showcased that it would be easy for a girl to survive on her own at that time. I despise the way they tried to shove this idealised and futile vision of independance down our throats.
That's one major thing that I've always respected in the books. Nancy Springer has always known that women are capable of great things, but at great costs and suffering. This movie's Enola was beyond pathetic in her dismal attempts at survival and wit. Our Enola would never have been that reckless and lacking in self-awareness. And for crying out loud, what on earth happened to the plot? To the mystery? To the sanctity of logic? To the rich character development in the books?
How could a script writer screw up with such an amazing source material? I assumed that someone that wrote for Skins, would at least be able to bring some edge and gravitas to this mess, but instead he just squandered an incredible premise, characters and seasoned actors.
