I believe this movie had good intentions, but the execution was incredibly poor. I understand what the director might have been trying to do, and I understand and support the desire to present a subject with nuance, but its failures cause it to become more damaging to its subjects than the positive.
I've watched and enjoyed movies like Pretty Baby, and Blue Lagoon. Those movies (while controversial in their own right) dealt with sexual awakening, innocence, body image, and the sexualization of youth in a better way than this film. If the directors wanted to be rational, they could have made this a documentary, or just thought this film through better. I understand how it may have wanted to portray how sexuality can at times be suppressed by overly religious conservativism, but that's not what a lot of this film was about, and it feels more like a shield against criticism. The other children in the film didn't face these issues, yet all possessed these odd hypersexualized motivations. Especially considering adult actors could at least have been used for many of the worse instances.
I believe directors have a responsibility to be aware of both the positive teachings, as well as the negative teachings of the work they produce. And in my opinion, the film they've created does much more to endorse pedophilic desires in the audience than confront or discourage them. This isn't how you use exploitation to teach a message. BUt i suppose that's up to each person to decide. But, I will say if you know someone who is struggling with dangerous desires, or is a child learning about their sexuality, don't let them watch this.
