Not everyone will appreciate this. I was born the year this was made (1968) and this is the first time I have seen it. The opening scenes of the apes was not what I expected and the four other family members I was sitting with got up and left me to it about this time!
It is thought provoking and way, way ahead of its time visually and acoustically. If you are in a hurry or expect high octane, wait until you are more relaxed and open to the experience awaiting in this film. Some parts seem pure genius, others clunky in the editing, but I am sure this shows my lacking rather than the film makers inabilities. I enjoyed the whole experience, and it seems to ask more questions that it answers. Intended I’m sure to be that way. Hal was scary on a level not often visited and the ‘hero’ is understatedly brave.
The breathing when on the repair exercise took you right there with him and showed his state of mind in a way I was not expecting. Much more in this film that I probably haven’t even deconstructed.
It’s a journey that means the most when you are in the right frame of mind.
No other film I can think of is quite like this.
