This film is definitely Marmite. You either love it or hate it. If you can see past the over the top acting of some of the actors and can not only pay attention but also immerse yourself into viewing it as a young innocent child it will push you to loving it.
The film on the surface is repeatedly strange, haunting and beautiful. This is old school cinematography, which quite frankly is a rare thing these days for a film to be shot this way in terms of staging, lighting, magic hour and more.
Things are revealed as the story unfolds, we are with Seth as he hears some rather disturbing accusations levied against his father. Of course he does not understand what the adults are discussing. There are a lot of scenes that are social commentary and shine a light on things that were considered perverse, the devils work, and scapegoats.
I am not going to claim that I know what 1950's small town America was like, but I did not find this setting to be out of the ordinary or startling. The attitudes of some of the adults may still linger in places today.
Watch the movie and judge for yourself. This is a perfect example of a cult film.
