This movie is a brutal and harrowing view of what it means to be Black in the so - called justice system . The presumption of innocence is thrown out the window . The rush to solve the high profile case included police misconduct at its best ,a prosecutor hiding evidence, a complete trampling of the young defendants rights and the utter lack of forensic investigation . The movie is not easy viewing . The impact of the system , not only on the young men but on their families and community is heart wrenching . The cast was was brilliant and very realistic in the portayal of fear and bewilderment and utter dispair . What purpose is the reading of the Miranda Rights to terrified 15 year olds who really were not told what the waiving of them would mean? The five young men were lied to, interrogated without representation and were held without sleep and food . The movie deals with their imprisonment and ultimate exoneration . Even in the face of evidence proving the innocence of the 5 accused ,the prosecutor and lead detective still made excuses and refused to concede the fact that they were wrong . This is the heart of a broken system . Nobody takes accountability for injustice and its aftermath . One is left wondering what repercussions ,if any ,were suffered by the above mentioned villains . This movie made me cry, curse ,leave the room and want to smash the screen It is a must - see production for truth seekers who want true justice and not the appearance of jutice to prevail
