The great think about this book is that Koonin doesn’t make grand claims either way. He just points out the science of climate change is far from settled, that our knowledge of what drives our climate is incredibly thin, that there is no consensus among scientists, that the models are inadequate and continually proved wrong, and that the claims of climate alarmists are exaggerated and built on sand.

An excellent movie and while all the performances were good, Glen Close’s performance was especially stunning. People are criticising this movie for bizarre political reasons. Some are taking offence at the suggestion that hard work can change a person’s life, and I saw one reviewer insist that the main character still had white privilege even though he grew up in poverty with a dysfunctional family life. None of these things were even touched on in the movie, but because the author of the original book (which is his life story) is considered pro Republican, there has been a knee jerk reaction to it. The Hollywood elitists won’t give this movie the credit it deserves, but I say make up your own mind and just enjoy it for the great performances and great direction.

Very good series. A little flexible with history, but the most enjoyable Rome series since "I Claudius" over 30 years ago. That series, by the way, is ripe for a remake with a bigger budget, better sets and tighter scripting - though it would be hard to do better than Derek Jacobi (who played Claudius) or John Hurt (who was a brilliant Caligula).
