It’s cute enough but it’s missing the slightly sad but sweet feeling that Gnomeo and Juliet gave us.
There are a number of inconsistencies, the missing adorable flamingoes, the lack of follow up with Nanette and Paris, the disappearance of Tybalt, Juliet’s character shifting from her usual feisty and prove-em-wrong self to....well to a rather predictable mumish character, the list goes on.
The appeal of the first movie was the two adorable houses and their quirky little flourishes. When you move away from that you’re left with the task of creating an outlandish and overdone quest of sorts. I know we’re operating on over done stories but moving away from Gnomeo and Juliet as the main characters could have been done a bit better. For starters, the story could have centred around Featherstone or even Nanette and Paris but then again I’m not a director.
All I’m saying is, Sherlock Gnomes missed out on continuing a lot of good plot points from Gnomeo & Juliet and moving the gnomes to London left us wondering how the two feuding neighbors got together in the first place. In my opinion, a movie centred on Gnomeo and Juliet trying to get their respective house and garden owners together would have made for a better movie.
