I was disappointed to hear this movie didn’t do well with certain audiences bc possible insensitive material geared (or lack there of) toward Autism.
As a mother of a special needs teenager on the autism spectrum and as a professional that works in Invention (Special Education) I think this movie was beautiful!
None of us can explain the visions created in the minds of Autistic people but Sia did a great job reaching deep within! My son constantly interacts with myself and others as if he’s living in a basketball movie lol His favorite movies are Like Mike and Space Jam. Not only does he think LeBron James is his dad, he goes each day explaining how he is going to be an NBA player and reenacting all the scenes! And like Music, he wakes up daily with the same routine, prefers the same food choices, suffers with noise and sensory sensitivity and although verbal (unlike Music) makes obnoxious noises and claps loudly when excited!
Nowhere during this movie did I find it offensive. Not to mention, I am also a dance instructor, and understand the importance of expressing and telling a story through movement. Not too many people realize that contemporary and lyrical dances are very expressionistic. The cast did a great job and I was SO happy at the end of the movie I cried - bc someone who has lived with another with Autism can truly appreciate the beauty in knowing it’s the little things they do that can move mountains and change the world ❤️
