A wonderful retelling of Mozart’s Magic Flute. Bergman uses all of his movie making prowess to tell the story in away that will keeps our attention to what we’re seeing while we are enraptured by what we are hearing. The acting in opera often has to take a backseat to the singing but in this film both are delightful. The setting of the film in a small stage theater is a master stroke. You genuinely feel you are viewing a staged opera but the closeups and smooth camera work let us enjoy all the nuance and intimacy of an insider. It’s a joyful movie and I highly recommend it.
