This is an eye-opening book. Well-researched and well-written. Remarkable insights for book that was written in 1968.
I've been researching slavery in my hometown, Rocky Hill, Ct. because the anecdotal stories I heard espoused a southern mode of slavery which didn't ring true for New England. Mr. Greene's book describes a system of slavery which was markedly different, if no less bigoted, exploitative, and unjust, than the southern model.
