More of a love story to Eurovision than a parody most the time; you sense a genuine affection for the contest in its writing. Though there are big set pieces which go horribly and funnily wrong for Fire Saga, it isn’t laugh out loud funny in most places, more lots of gentle, knowing smiles and nods to the ridiculousness of this massive spectacle. The songs are better than most the ‘real’ stuff on the radio (perhaps that’s my age showing...). Rachel McAdams’ character is incredibly sweet and Will Ferrel is also tamed down from his usual self somehow, again seeming to really love the subject material. In this cynical world a lot of people have focused on where this strays from ‘true’ Eurovision or the use of locations that aren’t real (like Glasgow venue being in Edinburgh). So what? It’s not a bleeding documentary. It’s a bit of fun with catchy songs, sweet relationships, lots of rude jokes about male body parts, beautiful Icelandic scenery, Elves and the best montage in the song of Eurovision winners ever. And Graham Norton too which tops off the whole thing for us. Our family loves it. Ja ja ding dong.
