I was insanely disappointed in this game and how it was treated from the very beginning. I hear a lot of people saying "it's okay that not all the Pokemon are here and that they did away with Mega Evolution" but I disagree so strongly that it hurts.
Some of my Pokemon are 10+ years old and it would be upsetting that they aren't compatible with this game...if this game was worth putting them in. Still; I find it super slimy that there are quite a few Pokemon behind a paywall.
While Mega Evolution was never a perfect mechanic, it's also not something you can just 'do away' with because it changed so much in the game itself. Whole strategies were centered around it, and now some of my Pokemon are actually useless now (not that it matters, b/c half of them cannot even be put in the game at this moment) and would have to be retrained in order to be any good. The way to fix the balancing issue of Mega Evolution was not to just get rid of it, but create more Megas, and not just for popular Pokemon. Do it for those who need the edge. Z moves were a great addition to the game that any Pokemon could use, which I thought was a great way to help the imbalance. Maybe I'd like Dynamax more if it wasn't super lame. "Pokemon big now use big move" is fan game level pathetic. And last time I checked; I could play fan games for free.
Getting rid of so many moves was also a major ugly mark on this game in my opinion. Yeah some didn't need to exist, but there are quite a few of those I actually enjoyed using, and now even if I wanted to bring some of my old partners into this game I wouldn't just because I could no longer use the moves I took time to teach them/breed into them and make strategies around.
Also the legendaries are super generic and boring. And even though I don't really play Pokemon for its plot (it's rarely any good), this had to be the weakest attempt at mythos I've ever encountered in these games.
And don't get me started on how on the nose the "WE'RE IN ENGLAND" aesthetic is. I like England. You know what doesn't need to be in Pokemon? Real world places. It's okay to take some inspiration from real world places, Pokemon has been doing it basically forever, but it's starting to get way to "LOOK IT'S JUST LIKE ____" for my liking.
Positives: it looks nice, the animations are dynamic, and though region variants are- in my opinion- pretty low hanging fruit in terms of content...I did like a few of them here. I would recommend just...not making it a habit. The wild area is a fun concept, and I actually enjoyed quite a few of the characters, even if they were pretty one dimensional (which is a given for a Pokemon game and not really all that important in the grand scheme of the game as a whole).
All in all; if this is what I can expect from the next game...count me out. I've been playing Pokemon loyally for over 20 years...but this is a huge red flag in terms of where the series is headed. Shame.
