As an avid Psych fan, I've wanted to see this movie for years. And I was so excited to finally get my hands on it, but after viewing (and even during), I found I was very disappointed and not really interested in the sequels.
The jokes, references, character comebacks, etc. were all spot-on, but everything else, like the plot, acting, and gags that went on far too long to be funny totally sucked.
The overacting was especially terrible it was like they took their typical tomfoolery and shenanigans from an 8 and kicked it up to an 11 and Gus burst into Reese's pieces, it was too much, over the top and cringe.
I didn't like it for the same reason I don't like the 100 Clues episode in the og series.
I liked that it continued right where the series left off and I wanted to love it, I really did, but it just fell so short of what I was expecting.
Spoilers below:
The first chase scene with Shawn in the Hagrid costume was the first indicator that I was going to be disappointed. It went on way too long with too many "funny" not funny Shawn-falling-over gags.
The sudden introduction of Iris Vick was interesting, but felt out of place.
The complete shift in characterization for Henry was a terrible decision, it's like he was there, but he wasn't. It was great to see Woody, but he also felt different.
Don't even talk to me about Shawn's dream.
Selene. Oh, what can I say about her... No. Just no. Gus doesn't need a romantic storyline for his character to be complete (imo, neither did Shawn, but whatever). Anyway, she was extra, over-the-top and annoying. I found myself groaning everytime she was forced on-scene. I don't care that she was supposed to out-gus, Gus. It just didn't work for me. He had more chemistry with the waffle he slapped Shawn with.
The climax was an awesome idea, bringing back the psychopath Allison Cowley was a master stroke, but the execution was atrocious. There was zero tension nor high stakes like there was in all three arcs to the Yin Yang episodes. It all felt like a silly, low stakes half-baked comedy session that they came up with on the fly. Was I scared? Was I quaking? No.
I didn't fear for anyone's lives the same way I did for Maddy, Abigail, or Juliet when they were kidnapped in the og series. I just didn't care, because I knew they would all make it.
Ugh and the cringe of Woody and Henry taking on the wrestler lady. Whatever.
And there's a million loose ends left on the table. Juliet's new partner whose dead? Iris and Karen have a new dog, what happens with that? Does Allison go back to jail? Gus's jerky that gets left in the abandoned asylum? Hello? It just ends abruptly on one of the worst wedding scenes ever. Honestly nothing can top the Lassiter wedding, but you could at least try.
Shawn is not psychic??? No hand to head, no awesome sleuthing. Nothing. There were maybe two scenes in which he used his "gift". Why call it Psych if he isn't even going to pretend to be psychic for half the movie? A better title would have been: The Former Cast of Psych Gets Together in San Francisco to Hang Out. I mean, there was barely a mystery to solve anyway, but come on, son!
Overall it was forgettable. I was expecting a mix of Last Night Gus and An Evening with Mr. Yang, but I was given an hour long 100 clues/A Touch of Sweevil with a plot that couldn't be bothered to keep my attention.
