I've read the original Sherlock Holmes, all 56 short stories and 4 novels by Conan Doyle, watched many adaptions including Robert Dowey Jr one and BBC one. Basing this as my qualification I'll proceed to write this review.
Let me start by saying that animation is good. The art style is good. They have portrayed the characters beautifully. Two stars are literally just for the animation.
But the positive review ends there. The plot is weak, really weak. I will admit that they've tried something. But it feels like the writers have just watched the famous adaptions of Sherlock Holmes and tried to write an intriguing story from Moriarty's point of view. To begin with Sherlock Holmes is the usual goofy, rude, comical character that began with the Robert Dowey Jr adaption. To the people who have never read the books, that is not how Sherlock is originally designed. The original Sherlock Holmes is kind, polite and humble because he believed that anyone can do what he does especially since all he does is observe his surroundings really well. That's it. So, Sherlock's character feels like a let down because you can literally see which are all the adaptions that has influenced the writer of this show through his character. Now Watson's character is also a let down because it's filtered down into a sad sidekick role with zero to no influence on the main story or on Sherlock. Again, the influences of his character design and his characteristics can be traced back to BBC adaptions and Robert Dowey Jr adaption. My pet peeve in every adaption including this is that they always give close to nothing for Watson. The original Sherlock Holmes did not have much for Watson because the whole narration was from Watson's point of view. So obviously he wouldn't write a lot about himself, I don't think anyone would. So when they adapt the story for the television they must provide that character with traits and depth that would do justice to the original. But I'll let this slide as the story focuses on Moriarty. As for Moriarty, the character design and characterization is orignal. They tried giving the character morality and tried justifying their actions. So it made the characters a lot more grey, rather than just black and white. That was a little interesting.
The storyline itself was rushed and lacked depth. Plot line for episode 11 was taken from Agatha Christie's Murder on Orient Express with their own little twist in the end. Episodes 12 and 13 which had Irene Adler were weak and personally irked me so much. Sherlock liked Irene because she was intellectually his equal. She was quick, intelligent and street smart apart from being conventionally pretty. But in this show Irene was useless. She wasn't portrayed as smart intelligent person who is capable of taking care of herself. Sherlock had to come to her rescue. It was borderline insulting.
The episodes were shallow and superficial. They could have written a better script. One star for trying and for Moriarty's character.
3/5 - Can watch it once for mindless entertainment
