Many people giving the one stars are just mad at the fact that it is not like the animated movie that released in 1998. This film is a reimagining of the story of Mulan and appeals more to the original tale in the Ballad of Mulan created thousands of years ago. It also addresses more about the culture and traditions back then at the time. The clothes they wear look so accurate from what they wear back then along with the gender roles of women and men. The Mulan we see is courageous since she lives up to the virtues and constantly struggles with her own truth. Her character development is significant and its worth watching. A Mulan that lives strongly by the virtues and responsibility for disguising as a man is something we did not see in the animated movie. This movie is not directed towards family but it is for everyone to enjoy. So whenever you decide to compare it to the original, do not do that. Read the original poem “Ballad of Mulan” to understand what this film is doing. Also look at the culture aspect of it, especially the gender role along with Mulan’s character being more braver than ever to admit her faults. If you look at things that way then this movie is great. They also had the perfect actors to play the roles.
