I enjoyed this show for about the first half of the first season, when it was a steamy romance with just enough intrigue and historical facts to keep me interested. 10,000 unnecessary rape scenes later and I’m fully over it. I read an interview with the director justifying the many explicit and disturbing rape scenes. She said she wanted to keep it as real as possible. No glossing over anything. WHY? Do they think they’re creating something culturally meaningful? I am not even of the camp that rape as a plot device is never justified, but holy hell I don’t even think rape occurred as frequently in real life during this time period as it does in this show.
Also Claire is an insufferable Mary Sue.
