I am on the 12th book of the Virgin River series and love it ..so I was very excited when I saw there was a show being produced. I really wanted to like it and my first concern was that the producers would move so quickly through the books that a lot of detail would be lost. Not so! In fact, it moves so slowly I'm not sure they even got through the first book in the first season. What are they expecting? How many shows ever last more than 5 seasons anyway.?....only the most excellent ones. The writers have made this so much more like a daytime soap opera that it got harder and harder to sit through until the last episode.
I really want to like it and keep watching, so if any of the writers are reading this and are listening.....here is what I have to say: the books are a hit for a reason. Why try to fix what is not broken? You have changed up so much of what really happens in the book from the original storyline which worked fabulously. I understand in some cases there may need to be a little more drama in a show than a book, but why does Mel need a stillborn baby that wasn't in the book and why did the circumstances of the death of her previous husband have to be changed? Especially given that the most dramatic moment in the book where Mel and Jack really get together is her meltdown in the rain on the anniversary of her husband's death and this was totally left out...why?.....this would have been excellent drama! Those other changes didn't offer any benefit, but probably disappointed other potential fans like me who are watching because I liked the books.
Making Hope into a nit-wit busy body really doesn't enhance the story, nor does making Jack come across as a vet who needs a drink every day or so to get by. This isn't how he's portrayed in the book series. Lastly, I totally agree with another review I read and his girlfriend's accidental pregnancy was a ridiculous and un-needed addition obviously intended to complicate the lives of the main characters. I think what most of us who are watching want is a pleasant story to enjoy that doesn't need excess grief or complications the lives of the main characters for the sake of drama!
In summary, if you get a chance for another season, which I hope you do, please consider following the original author's story line more closely. By the way, two of my favorite couples in the books are Noah and Ellie, and Sean and Francie. At the rate you are going, we'll never get to meet them before this series ends :(
