Di Morrissey has a formidable writing reputation, so when I was gifted Before the Storm, I expected an absorbing read. I'm afraid I was left surprisingly deflated. If you like 'nice', then you might enjoy this. I found the plot line predictable, the characters one-dimensional relying heavily on stereotypes and archetypes drawn without nuance or depth. I did not feel any affinity to the main character and did not feel fear, heartbreak, grief, humour - in fact, I didn't care about any of the characters. The story provided manufactured tension. The themes were definitely worth exploring - long-held secrets, corruption and manipulation - but they were revealed as though telling a bedtime fairy story of evil witches. Shallow, predictable, flat and totally boring story and characters. Terribly disappointed given the author's reputation.
