Excellent French movie that explores the French-Senegalese director Maïmouna Doucouré’s own experience growing up in a conservative religious Muslim immigrant family and trying to maneuver growing up in the liberal Western world while being rooted in her conservative family environment. While many Americans (who presumably haven’t even seen the film) are outraged over what they see as sexualization of 11-year-olds, the movie actually criticizes the hypersexualization of young girls, which -- ironically -- comes from the United States.
