My suggested (and expected) optional ending was that the man approaching the son at the stream is a police officer and the son gets arrested and convicted because he handled the knife that killed Chris and his mom. Possibly thrown in that he was delusional about the stranger but did the killings and turnings off of the water heater in a state.
