Don't listen to the "critics", they only go off of what stereotypes they've been told and shown of an "angry black woman" and can't relate to real issues of other groups of people. It's a very good story of what a hard-working woman had to endure for so more than a decade, putting up with her husband that didn't make good decisions which ended up costing her almost everything; and in the end (without giving spoilers) he betrays her when he finally has it all. Only those who have experienced her pain in reality and can relate from others' experiences will be able to enjoy this movie. Taraji played the role of Melinda very well because she expressed her angry realistically from a point of view of someone who's suffered through that much.
